Call for Submissions

This has been an interesting weekend.
I went looking for publications to submit my work, and in addition to that, also wound up becoming a "Slush Pile" reader for Vagabondage Press' "The Battered Suitcase" (!!!)
While doing all of this, I found a few places that looked interesting, but ultimately not for me. So, I thought I would share them with any of you interested.
Firstly, of course I'm going to pimp The Battered Suitcase if for no other reason that I will need some excellent stories to read!
Wicked East Press I went looking for them because one of their upcoming anthologies was asking for stories of insanity. I do like to write about the crazysometimes it's even fiction. :)) But, looking at their website, I saw it was more horror/supernaturally than I usually write. They do have quite a few interesting themes coming up including Pirates, Vampires, Witches and one called "Father Grimm's Storybook" a new twist on old tales. SPOOOOOOKY!
Chroma: A Queer Literary Journal Their issues center around theme as well. The upcoming one is "Faith" and they will be taking submissions for that one until August 2011. They are headquartered in the UK, but it looks like they take writing from all over. From their website: Published twice a year, the journal promotes edgy, lyrical, and challenging prose, poetry and artwork by lesbian, gay, bi and trans writers and artists from around the world.
May December Publications This publication isn't what you think it is. In one word, it is ZOMBIES! Apparently zombies are still in? I sent out my one and only zombie story and then found about 6 places looking for some sort of zombie story. This place is looking for stories written by women. Perfect for me, right? Sadly, my aforementioned story isn't long enough for what they're looking for. (They want 3k to 10k stories) Still, plenty of time to write another one. Deadline for the ladies is January 2011 (Dudes get there chance in February.)
Freaky Fountain Press Where does a reader go to find edgy, psychologically dark, and high-quality literary erotica? Here is your place. They have two upcoming anthologies that look good:
Bad Romance: When my crazy + your crazy = unholy ecstasy. Carve my name into your flesh and remember. These are the stories we want.
AND
This is the Way the World Ends: We want stories exploring the connections between destruction and sex, death and love, survival and rebirth, all set in the post-apocalyptic landscapes of your hottest dreams.
Both have deadlines of December 1st.
Luna Station Quarterly is a magazine focused on genre fiction as written by women. This looks like a fun online journal created by a fanfic writer turned original. They also have a publication devoted entirely to the 100 word story! I might actually submit to this one.
I found all these places on Duotrope's Digest which is the very best search engine for fiction and poetry I've ever found. It's amazing! If you use it and love it like I do, you should consider contributing funds to keep it running and keep it ad free. It's better than Writer's Market and that thing is 50 bucks a year!
But, I do have to point out the funniest entry I've yet to find. This is from Duotrope's entry on a place called "The Writer's Block":
Post-modernism has become inaccessible to the average human being. Writing has, to a large extent, become esoteric and purely intellectual. We find ourselves in awe of bpNichol's innovative prowess, but only a tiny sliver of us can understand him. His project, therefore, is relatively meaningless in our contemporary context, if we gauge it by impact on the public. Thus, writing which balances impact and innovation must be recognized and given a legitimate venue in which to voice itself. The Writer's Block is intended to provide such a venue.
Note to Pretentious Publication-- Telling everyone that you're looking for stories to appeal to the "everyman" by using obscure literary example and words you'd need a Ph.d in Linguistics to understand probably isn't the best way to go.
Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with any of these publications (well except The Battered Suitcase, sort of) and am not being paid, or in anyway compensated by anyone for this post.
HAPPY PUBLISHING!
THIRTEEN MORE DAYS UNTIL NaNoWriMo!!
